Space Week

We have been taking part in National Space week. First we talked about all the things we already knew about space. We knew that Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon and that there were 8 planets in our Solar System. We then looked more carefully at the sun, moon and Earth as we had some very interesting misconceptions about their part in our Solar System!

We learned that:

  • the Sun is a very big star
  • Earth is always spinning and this is why we have day and night
  • the Earth orbits the sun and it takes a whole year to go around it once
  • the moon goes round the Earth about once a month

We used different sized balls to help us to demonstrate what we learned. Take a look!

After that we learned lots more about our Solar System and the different planets, putting them in the right order. We used Miss Fovargue’s mnemonic to help us!

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets. (We also found out that Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet).

After that we looked at Nasa’s very interesting website that gave us lots more information on the planets and even let us look inside some of them!

Here is the link if you would like to explore further.
