Science is made more relevant to children’s needs by being taught through themed units in each term. The different themes and focusses aim to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of the physical world, its processes and of living things. Children engage in practical learning which utilises the local environment, for example by examining plants and living things in the school grounds and wild area or through visits to the school forest. Children take part in tree planting programmes, science and technology days and educational visits to off-site resources such as nature parks and the sea shore which support their learning in science and the wider curriculum.
In their Reception years children develop their scientific knowledge and understanding of the world through play and exploration which is linked to the termly themes.
