Inter-school Spelling Bee

Children from year 3 took part in a school spelling bee with pupils from around Grimsby and Cleethorpes. With our partner schools of Bursar, St Peters, Old Clee and Thrunscoe we put a team of 5 pupils forward to represent Lisle Marsden.

The children were tested on a variety of words from the standard Year 3/4 spelling list over 5 rounds, with 10 words per rounds. The rounds covered the list, homophones, trickey words, prefixes and suffixes.

The team from Lisle started strongly scoring 10 out 10 in the first two rounds, before dropping a mark in round 3. The team from Thurunscoe scored 10 out of 10 in the first four rounds before dropping a mark in the final round! this meant a tie-break question. The children were asked to spell ‘occasionally’. Both the teams from Lisle and Thrunscoe spelled the word correctly, meaning that with scores of 49 out of 50 both teams were crowned Year 3 Spelling Bee Champions 2017.

Well done to Isabelle, Ruby, Lewis, Alex and Jasmine.

The children who were watching from the audience took part in the bee and scores were taken back to classes, with some very good results recorded.

It was an extremely enjoyable afternoon and a particularly pleasing result!

Can children in Year 3 spell? YES WE CAN!
